The week of January 30th to February 3rd, 2023 all of Texas experienced a winter storm. The roads were covered in black ice, causing difficulty to drive on, which forced most establishments, including schools, to cancel. Parents, Students, Teachers, etc… were all stuck in their homes for the week, and some people even experienced power outages.
Many students at Guyer high school took this break as a chance to rest and take some time off school. It was a nice time to be able to take a deep breath and recharge. Since catching up on schoolwork was not a part of most people’s agenda, many watched movies, went sledding, and spent some time with their families. Even though most liked this week off, some did not because the school district had to cancel the rest of the half days and some holidays to make up for the missing days. Also, students expressed that being in the house 24/7 can get boring and people start to miss their friends.
This was also a good time for Teachers to get a break and be home with their kids and families. They got to play with their kids outside on the ice, do some cleaning around the house, do a little school work, and have some relaxing time. Most teachers also agreed that they liked the week off, but at the same time they wished they still had days off throughout the year like Good Friday and Presidents Day. They also started to miss their students and wanted to see their faces again.
Alisha Sajeesh, a Junior at Guyer, was asked if she ever got tired of being with her family for so long and she said, “I didn’t get tired of my family at all! Normally we don’t get to be together because my parents have work and me and my siblings have school. We mind our own business, but being stuck at home really gave us an opportunity to just spend time with each other.”
Mrs. Riley, the honors Chemistry and APES teacher, was asked if she got bored being trapped in the house all day “I don’t get bored – there is always something to do. Being bored means you are not willing to try something new or challenge yourself,” she said.
The winter storm break allowed most people to take some time to rest and recharge before heading back to work and school. Some expressed that it was a fun time to go outside and play not having to worry about doing tons of homework. It forced people to stay at home which allowed many to spend some quality time with family, which is really nice because normally it can be difficult to do. After the weather cleared up, many students still did not want to return to school, but once they did they felt way more refreshed and ready to get back to learning.
