Guyer High School holds a place where students can express themselves in every way. Each year, Guyer allows students to do this by opening up new activities that branch outside of school hours. This year especially, many new additions have been added to this list while ideas have been flourishing. Amongst one of the new openings is Baking Club.
Baking club is a place where students can come together and share their love of baking. It creates a light environment where people are comfortable asking questions about what they’re making, and the process of doing it. Meetings are hosted once a month on the last Monday in Mrs. Moala’s culinary room. The club is run by Sammy Wang and Yuri Sung.
Before a meeting is confirmed, the two founders start to buy and prepare ingredients. They next write and test out their recipes before using them for every member. When approved, the food item is posted on the official club Instagram page, where students can fill out a Google Form to join the meeting. Typically, they bake sweet pastries. Sometimes to raise money for the ingredients, Baking Club also sells baked goods before and after school. The founders have a little help from a group of close friends when they need to bake a large amount of foods, or when they budget things. “Our club officers gather together on the day before the sale, we mass bake all night to ensure quality food for the buyers. It’s a difficult task, but it’s well rewarding,” said Yuri.
Sammy explains how they had to fill out a form at the front office, then find a sponsor for their club. After that, the group took flight as they started to advertise it. Around 15-20 people attend regular meetings, but even more attend during bigger events. The first few events were a little uncoordinated, “We were really unprepared in the beginning and didn’t know what to expect, but the meetings started to run smoothly later on,” Sammy said. Though Baking Club had a rough opening, it has consistently been a hit throughout the year, and many students appreciate the opportunity to gather together and share a passion that they love.
