On January 30th, Guyer High School experienced an icy snow day during school hours. Over three thousand students and staff had to leave school early due to worsening conditions. Some students already forecasted the dangerous road conditions, and decided to stay home. As the week passed on, the whole district was closed, and the weather was the coldest it’s been in two years.
It doesn’t snow very often in Texas, however when it does, it can cause a lot of problems. Many students drove on ice for the first time, which was an experience that was very scary for some of them. There were many problems with dismissing students, and there were many complaints about Guyer being open in the first place. Because of the dangerous road conditions, parents and students on social media protested against the schools decision to stay open. The entire week of school ended up being closed, and wouldn’t resume until the Monday after.
Bryce Caver, a Junior at Guyer, was one of the students that had to drive under the icy conditions. “The traffic was terrifying, snow pouring on your windows and drifting on ice. It’s not something I’ve ever had to do before.” recalled Bryce. “There were many times where I could have actually crashed.” said Hector Garcia, Bryce’s friend, who saw a car stationary in a ditch during his ride home.
However, snow days aren’t all scary and dangerous. “Me and my family built a snowman in our front yard, but the next morning the snowman was crumbled and destroyed and there were three birds sitting over it” exclaimed Hector. “But it was funny and we just made hot cocoa laughing with each other about it,” he added.
Most students, especially in Denton, appreciate the rare snow days, and parents too. With time off from both jobs and school, families that don’t typically spend much time together can finally have a chance to reconnect in their cozy homes.
