High schools all around the world have sports teams, but they also have gaming teams.
Guyer’s esports club started off in 2020 during the pandemic. It’s very simple to join. To join, people don’t have to be good; anyone who wants to join can be mediocre and still be on the team. Anyone can ask and fill out a form to join.
There are a ton of games like Rocket League, Valorant, Smash bros, and for some of these games, they all practice before and after school with their Alienware PCs, but they also practice outside of school too.
Their season has started, as they have seasonal schedules that start the same season as football, basketball, or track.
Walking into Guyer’s esports room, the teamwork and chemistry between teammates is immaculate.
When asked what makes the team work so well, Taka Koga, a junior and the captain of the Rocket League team and the Valorant team, said, “We spend time bonding, hanging out, making memories, and overall having fun. Having so many connections with people on my team, it lets me feel at ease, and creates a very fun, humorous and safe environment.”
Furthermore, when asked what he thinks makes the team different from others Koga said, “My teams aren’t just teams, they’re friend groups.” All of this will help their teamwork and chemistry. We consider each other friends, and that plays a huge role in how we play in-game. We trust each other and aren’t afraid to communicate.
With video games, a lot of those games are centered around teamwork and communication. Guyer Esports has that on all the different teams in the club.
