Guyer high school golf team has five girls but one of them stands out from the rest because of her ability to be a team player, her name is Carley Button. A senior and varsity athlete, Carley has been playing golf ever since sixth grade. Her goal has always been to play college level. She got into high school golf to prepare, compete, and expand her skills and experience to achieve her goal.
Junior year is when she saw major improvements to her game and that year is also when she really got to know her teammates. Even though golf is definitely an individual sport, Carley has learned the importance of actively contributing to the team. Her best advice is “get to know your teammates.” Guyer’s team practices together to get the best score possible. Practice is scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for about two hours after school. Golf courses around the Denton area provide the range for 18 hole practice ideal for the team.
Carley’s personal goal was to go to state “I felt like I did my best to achieve that goal and I am proud of the journey I’ve had.” She describes being on the Guyer golf team “is like being on a rollercoaster because of all the ups and downs of what I’ve experienced throughout my four years.” While talking about golf being an individual sport but having the team aspect Carley adds “I’ve never had that pressure before of doing good for myself and for the team.” When asked what her favorite memory was she said “ every year in the fall we would go to Texarkana for a tournament and it’s fun because the course is so beautiful and we get to hang out in a hotel and just have fun playing good golf.”
When asked what the hardest part of playing golf is, Carley responded “the most challenging part of golf is my own mentality.” When talking about life after high school Carley said “I don’t think I want to go pro because I don’t think that I am at that level yet” Adding on to that conversation about college Carley said “I am playing for South Eastern Oklahoma college.”
Overall, Carley Button has grown as an individual and a golf player. She has overcome many hardships and because of these challenges she was able to grow as a player. Throughout her four years at Guyer, many good memories were made while playing on the golf team. Carley has also made many great friends throughout these four years of being on the golf team playing tournaments and matches. Carley is proud of what she has done on the team and what she has accomplished. Throughout her many experiences at Guyer, Carley has made good friends, good memories, and hurdled many obstacles that made her a great player and a person.
