Denton Guyer is known for being outstanding in all sports across the board but this year one sport in particular is getting all the attention. With such a demanding practice schedule, the girls definitely see the results of their hard work. With a record of 33-0, the Wildcats have accomplished their longest undefeated season in the 18 years the program has been open.
The team is led by seniors Avery Jefferson, Tehya Pitts, Erin Love, Paige Luzader and Erika Gazalski. All of which have been surrounded by softball their entire lives and plan to continue this journey into their college years. All five seniors have a deep love of the Guyer program, their adolescent dreams being to wear a Wildcat jersey for their four years of high school. Their freshman year came and they officially became a Guyer Wildcat.
Head coach Keith Medford had a lot to say about the program. “It’s very rewarding to be blessed with such great and unique kids,” Medford says. When asked about how his athletes feel about their record, Medford said, “We know we’re good, we know we are successful and we talk about it, there’s no shying away about what we’ve accomplished.”
It’s apparent by all that have a knowledge of the game of softball that the standard and expectation is elevated at Denton Guyer. People may ask what keeps such a high level and competitive team on a long and difficult winning streak, “Consistency, maturity and leadership is what drives us, success is not just wins and losses it’s about achieving excellence,” Medford says.
It is clear to see that this team is on their way to excellence, some say it has already been achieved but the Lady Wildcats are far from stopping. Their goal being to win the state championship later this month of May. While softball may just seem like another sport to some, to these girls it is their everything and they plan to show the state of Texas why they are the best.
