The Junior Varsity girls golf team faced teams from Frisco Panther Creek and Coppell in their game. Throughout the tournament, the girls golf team faced just as many challenges as moments of fun.
From chilly warm-ups to bundling up between holes, the team pushed through the cold while staying focused on each shot. They navigated the long walks across the course, determined to give their best effort at every hole until it was time to go home and take a well earned rest.
In the early morning, as the sun began to light up the course and the air remained frigid, the JV girls golf team arrived at the golfing range in Champion Circle, Fort Worth, around 7 a.m. to start warming up for their tournament. They had the choice of practicing on the putting green or the driving range. During this time, hand warmers were passed around, and encouraging words were exchanged as the team prepared for the day ahead in the chilly 43-degree weather.
“I wake up and drink my coffee and protein shake, and just kind of have to get in the mindset while listening to some good music- some Christian, some gospel, you know?” sophomore Olivia Gossett said.
After warming up, the girls were split into groups against other school teams to find their starting holes to get ready to begin at 8 a.m.
Around noon, the golfers began to get into the swing of things, starting to hit better consecutive shots. It also helped that the weather started warming up to from 12 p.m. and stayed warmer till the end of the tournament. Golfers were encouraged to bring food and water during their game, so while walking from hole to hole some were snacking to bring up their energy.
“It’s a mental game, so positivity is your best friend,” sophomore Kyra Johnson said.
The tournament started coming to a close around 2:15 p.m. as golfers started finishing up their rounds and came to get in their school groups to wait for their other finishing teammates.
“It usually starts out pretty rough, and we like to joke about how the first three to six holes are like the warm up holes and usually don’t do the best,” sophomore Zoie Morales said. “It started to get much better as time progressed.”
The Guyer JV Girls Golf team placed fourth in the tournament. Usually after tournaments there is a recognition ceremony to those who scored the best, but this competition ran a little later so they didn’t do any announcements in the end.
