Head of the English department Shanna Stovall and football coach Mitch Stovall have been here since the very beginning, working together.
For 20 years, Guyer has evolved, creating relationships with teachers and their students. One relationship that has caught eyes is the couple Shanna and Mitch Stovall. They have been here since the beginning, going through a teaching journey together throughout the years.
“We both take pride in the fact that we have represented the silver and black since 2005. I would say that it is special,” Mr. Stovall said.
The Stovalls have worked here for a very long time, but they were teaching together even before they came to Guyer.
“I taught English in Brownwood, which is like Central Texas, for nine years,” Mrs. Stovall said.
“I coached at Brownwood High School. That was a neat experience as well because that is where we both grew up,” Mr. Stovall said.
With their jobs they had before and now, their jobs are far from similar.
“I don’t think I could switch jobs with him,” Mrs. Stovall said. “I don’t think I would do very well. He goes to work really early, before the sun comes up, and, depending on the time of year, he comes home really late. So I could not do that.”
“It would be disastrous!” Mr. Stovall said. “In no way am I capable of teaching what she teaches and being responsible for the entire English department. Guyer is fortunate to have her working here.”
Working at the same place for this long with your spouse brings one question to mind: Do they ever see each other at school?
“I never see him on campus. I could go months without seeing him, because we don’t work in the same hallways or buildings,” Mrs. Stovall said. “It’s probably the best that we don’t work closely together.”
This couple shows us what a good dynamic actually looks like.
“We have mutual kids, so we get to talk about them sometimes when we’re both home, but overall it’s odd because I feel like he doesn’t work here, even though I know he does,” Mrs. Stovall said.
Working with a spouse can be somewhat challenging yet can also be fun. With them working here since 2005, lots of people have gotten to experience their strong dynamic.
“We were both hired by Barbara Fischer in January of 2005,” Mr. Stovall said. “Not too many people in our profession stay at one place for that length of time. From our point of view, we have had a small hand in helping make Guyer a positive place for students and staff. Go Wildcats!”
