Behind the scenes in the lively days at Guyer, we have everyday superheroes that turn hangry, empty-bellied students into content, filled ones. Lunch goes from the time of 11:20 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. During this time, the cafeteria workers save a multitude of students’ stomachs with their perseverance and shining smiles.
The lunch ladies start work around 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on a daily basis. This is the usual time considering they have to get up early to arrange breakfast. Sometimes they have special food to celebrate specific holidays, like the ‘Super Bowl Feast’ on Feb. 6. These days include new kinds of meals or snacks to commemorate the day. If you check Denton ISD’s nutrition page, you will be able to see all the different special days they have.
There are a variety of different foods to pick from each day.
Monday- Greek-Seasoned Diced Chicken
Tuesday- Bone-In Chicken Wings
Wednesday- Chicken Mega Minis
Thursday- Bone-In Chicken Wings
Friday- Greek-Seasoned Diced Chicken
There is a lot of preparation that goes into serving food to hundreds of kids per day. From breakfast to lunch and even snacks, the lunch ladies manage to have the lunches out and ready to serve on time without fail.
“Working here is my passion, yes. It is truly my joy. I am a retired dental assistant, and serving here is what I love,” cafeteria worker Ms. Laura said.
On the topic of lunches and their edibility, the opinions are quite diverse. Some students find that specific items on the menu appeal to them more than others. Other students simply bring lunch from home, so the argument about school lunch doesn’t apply to them.
“I only really eat the pizza but for me it’s genuinely okay. It is a little too greasy, and sometimes it tastes a little off, but it’s overall just okay. I feel like we shouldn’t be paying for water bottles though,” sophomore Ava McAndrew said.
Through multiple interviews, the students’ opinions seem to have a common string: ‘good but greasy’.
“The school lunch is pretty good, although sometimes it’s too greasy,” junior Hally Hall said.

Totally valid perspectives. We should really look at offering better lunches and also free waters to these kids.
