On Saturday, Finley Montgomery spoke about her accomplishments at Guyer, what she looks forward to in her future and how she has worked to inspire other incoming wildcats due to this being her last year at Guyer.
Montgomery is the starting pitcher for the softball team and is also the team’s designated hitter. She plays pitcher and is a powerful hitter as well. She is a senior at Guyer and is committed to Notre Dame for softball.
Montgomery opened up about her time at Guyer and how it has been playing for this team. Over all of her years at this school, she has been a leader for Guyer High School’s softball program. She had a clear response to the question and expressed her appreciation for the team.
“Playing with Guyer has meant a lot to me, and I have learned so much from my coaches and teammates along the way,” Montgomery said.
She has been playing for Guyer softball since she was a freshman, and now, entering her senior year, she has risen into a star for this team.
Since Montgomery is now a senior, her goals for this year definitely reflect on her past years. During her time at Guyer over the years, she has been one of the top workhorse players for Guyer for almost every year, and she has learned a lot from her coaches and others. But to her, one of them has stood out the most.
“One thing I have learned over my years that has really stuck to me, is that the game of softball is much harder mentally than people would think,” Montgomery said.
Last year, Montgomery and the team made it all the way to the state semi-finals but came up short. This year, Finley looks to go all the way.
“Though last year we came up short, I could tell that what made us come far was that we were strong as a team. I think that’s what we need to look to have this year,” Montgomery said.
Due to this year being her senior year and next year she will going off to college, Montgomery was questioned over what she looks forward to about her future and what she looks forward to at Notre Dame. Montgomery, who committed to this college as a junior, looks forward very much to this opportunity.
“I think I really look forward to the atmosphere. It’s a really high level of competition and I really look forward to competing in it,” Montgomery said.
Committing to this college must’ve been a tough decision. So what made her choose this college? Rather than a hesitant answer, the answer was pretty simple.
“One thing that made this commitment decision very easy was the coaching staff. Compared to other coaches, they just felt better,” Montgomery said.
Since Montgomery is now a senior and will be leaving this school next year, Montgomery reflects back on her freshman year when she was first introduced to Guyer, and remembers what it was like for her to first walk onto the softball field.
“When I first came to this school, it felt as if I was at step one,” Montgomery said. “Thats how I believe others should think of their freshman years. Now as a senior, I look back at those years and feel proud of how far I was able to come.”
In the end, Montgomery plays a key role for the team. She is a hard-working pitcher committed to Power Five school Notre Dame. Montgomery is a leader for the team and serves as an example for other players. Guyer will rely on Montgomery throughout the season.
