The “Wildcat Relays” is a track meet hosted by Guyer High School, and both teams are encouraging as many people as possible to attend.
Due to construction on the school’s campus, there was a shortage of parking around the fieldhouses by the track, preventing a home meet from happening in over two years. Now that the construction is nearly complete, parking will be open for the track meet to be hosted.
The meet will be at the Guyer Track on Thursday, March 26th, and it is really encouraged for as many students, staff, parents, or other supporters within the Wildcat community to go. There will be pretty tough competition at the meet, so it’s important to show school pride to the other schools attending.
Even if it’s during a school day, it wouldn’t hurt for teachers to let their students support the Guyer athletes. The head boy’s track coach, Coach Moss, was able to give input on how she is feeling about the meet.
“I’m excited for it. The first year I was at Guyer, we hosted one, and it was a great success,” Moss said. “Our athletes were disappointed last year because of construction that we couldn’t have our meet, so I think it’s great for our program, for our athletes to get the recognition and also for the community to see them, support them, and acknowledge our hard work.”
The home field advantage doesn’t just benefit the Guyer athletes, however. There is a whole community that benefits as well.
“We also have a middle school recognition where we bring them up to acknowledge those who are in the middle school track program, so it’s another huge connection we have,” Moss said.
Finally, Coach Moss expressed thoughts towards students, staff, and parents regarding the meet.
“It’s going to be an exciting day. Our athletes are preparing, they want to showcase all their hard work, and they would encourage the support. They might even come out and break some records that you wouldn’t want to miss,” Moss said.
Putting this into perspective, this information and excitement so far is only from the boys’ team.
Next up, the head girl’s track coach, Trenton Phelps, gave input about the meet, starting with him giving details about what makes the track entertaining to watch.
“The ultimate mental battle of competition and the fact that there is no luck involved. It is you vs. someone else or multiple other people to see who’s the fastest, who can jump the furthest, who can throw the furthest, and it makes it a raw sport that people can enjoy,” Phelps said.
Phelps also expresses excitement about this meet happening for the first time in over two years.
“With the new facility being built now, we’ll make sure it does happen every year, and it’s something that can be special for our team to have every year. It is unfortunate we had to take a year off, but we’ll make sure we make it more of a yearly tradition,” Phelps said.
In the end, Phelps was asked about what he would say to students, staff, and parents regarding the meet.
“It’s going to be for the community. We’re going to have music, food trucks, and racing all day. You will get to see Guyer athletes at every corner competing to win a championship and protect a home meet that we’ve done really well at in the past,” Phelps said.
More information will be posted across social media platforms as the meet date gets closer. Be a true fan and support the local track teams today!
